Cross Browser Compatability17 Nov
I cannot stress it enough that websites must work properly on multiple browsers. Now, I am not talking about all of the hundreds of iterations and types out there, but the major 3 or 4 need to be covered at least. These include Internet Explorer (6, deff. 7), Firefox (2 and 3), Safari (curr. version), and maybe Opera (curr. version). Read More…
Lightbox issues with WordPress 2.6.310 Nov
As some of you may have encountered, WordPress 2.6.3 may be causing issues with existing WordPress Lightbox plugins. At least, this was the case with my implementation. After some investigating, i was unable to resolve the issues and decided to venture out once again and find an appropriate plugin. Read More…
WordPress 2.7 Beta 2 Released10 Nov
I got a chance to sit down and play with the new WordPress 2.7 Beta 2 that has been released. I have to tell you, this is going to be a fairly major overhaul for the existing suite of tools. I am impressed with the tool set being redone, and placed on the left of the screen. I really like how the sections within that toolbar are easy and manageable, without there being a separation between “writing” something and “Managing” it such as posts or pages. Having the layout on the administration side like that is about the best thing since sliced bread! I don’t have many details of what has been changing behind the scenes however, I did want to post up a few screen shots of this new beast. Read More…
Victorian Glory, by Paul Duchscherer06 Nov
I was downtown at the San Francisco Public Library on the 6th floor in their historical section (local history) where I had a chance to view some of the local architecture books on display. Man what a choice they have. For those that are not aware, I am writing a book (at least starting to) in which I am doing a series of before and after prints of historical Victorian houses in the area. In my beginning research, I am focusing on several time periods in the city which dictated the style of house being built.
The interesting thing is that this book really gives a very good overall look into each time period as well as including visual representations (photo’s, illustrations, etc.). You get a good sense of why certain styles became the standard in certain sections of the city based on population, income levels, types of jobs, etc. There were only a handful of well known architects who were in the city, and most of the houses came from these Italian, Irish, and other ethnic groups. Selling off my two Airport Express routers06 Nov
I have posted up on the Bay, two of my Airport Express WiFi G routers which will be replaced with two new N Airport Express routers! I love these little guys. They are portable, can have stored profiles, and offer great connectivity even under G mode. I need the N as I am upgrading everything across the board here. Here is a link to the auctions.
I have a unique network setup in the sense that I have two Airport Express routers, one of which is connected to my Cradlepoint CTR500 router recieving an EVDO connection. I then have my stereo hooked up to my living room Airport Express, and in the bedroom, a second Airport Express which is joined to the existing network directly. That serves as my wireless printing and bedroom speakers setup. All in all, it works very well though sometimes due to my EVDO connection, isn’t as fast as I would like. Its nothing to do with the Airport Express, but all to do with my EVDO Sprint connection.
The Election 2008!05 Nov
I really hope that everyone had a chance to sit down and watch the election last night. Amy and I had dinner with some friends, and then embarked on our journey downtown until we reached El Rio for our first stop. There we were able to see Obama’s speach which was absolutely incredible! The energy in the room was insane and so many people were cheering, chanting, and praising this victory! I think this is the first election in my history that I can recall this much energy!
Being in California, the whole state was buzzing over this. It was a clear sweep and the networks were already declaring Obama the 44th President as of 8:30 PM PST. After seeing the speech and having a few drinks, we decided to head out to the Castro and see what was left of the party. Unfortunitly, there wasn’t much going on with the music, etc., and the place was beginning to shut down. There was however, a TON of people in the streets partying regardless of whether the event was done or not! It was very exciting. We ended up wrapping the night at a friends house but reflecting on how amazing all of this really is. I have hope that we will see change, but remember that this does NOT start at the government’s level, but instead at our level on the streets. We need to make the change happen and can’t rely on just the government. It all starts with us!
Time for a new site!02 Nov
I first revamped my site over the summer while living in Massachusetts but was not happy with the result. Interestingly enough, I sat on that for quite some time until I could focus on what my needs really were with the projects I was doing, and the direction of my freelance work. As with most personal projects, this got put on hold for several months.
Now I have geared up and produced yet another version of my site for everyone to see. This time it is based on WordPress and the VibrantCMS Framework. This allowed for a grid level control over the layout and features of this site. I was able to take the site in a direction not previously possible under the K2 platform for WordPress.
So thats about it, a new site, some new direction, and a few new clients that will be added into the portfolio this fall! Thanks for all the support from my friends and family.
